Fun in the sun!

Here are some helpful hints for having fun in the sun safely.  Summer is here and it is the hottest time of the year.  It is important to remember that heat stroke is a major issue this time of year.  Do not leave your pet unattended without shade & water.  Just 10 minutes or more in the sun can cause your pet to become overheated.  Your pet can get heat stroke even while swimming!

Make Fishing Enjoyable For All

When fishing, be aware that the bait you use to catch a fish is also tempting to your pet.  Many dogs and cats have eaten the bait along with the hook and line.  Some pets can also step on a hook and it may become embedded in their skin.

If your dog swallows a fish hook, the most important thing to remember is not to pull the line.  This will result in setting the hook.  Tie the line to your pet's collar to prevent further swallowing of more of the line and contact your veterinarian during work hours or the veterinary emergency hospital after hours and on weekends.

Fishhooks have barbs and if attempted to be removed, this can cause more trauma and infection may occur.  This is extremely painful for the pet.

Every day or two, it is a good idea to walk the perimeter of your yard.  Look for sharp wires in the fence, nails, glass, trash or anything unusual that could harm your pet.

With a little extra caution, summertime can be enjoyable for both you and your pet.
