June - Senior Wellness & Allergies

Seniors

Senior cats & dogs are the best.  Like humans they need extra care as they get older.  Common senior issues include; arthritis, hypothyroidism, eye defects and loss of vision, and also changes in kidneys, liver, and other organs.  Senior dogs also deal with incontinence.  There are a number of medications that can be used to treat many of these conditions.  Which is why it is important to get continued care for your senior friend.  Blood work is the best way to keep a watchful eye on the condition of your pet.  Along with an exam every 6 months, we recommend checking for parasites and also monitoring blood pressure once yearly.  In our senior wellness package we offer a CBC/General Health Profile.  The CBC checks for anemia and infection in the blood stream.  The General Health Profile checks kidney and liver functions.  Checking these yearly ensures you wont miss something going on with your pet before its too late.

Allergies

Summer is here!  And no one is privileged enough to be exempt from these conditions.  Notify your veterinarian if you see any itching or watering eyes.  As these may be signs of allergies.  Some canines are allergic to things as simple as grass or pollen.  There are tests that can be done to ascertain what your pet is allergic to, but contacting your veterinarian is the first step.  Fleas are also a cause of itching, and some canines have a flea allergy.  For more information on flea allergies contact our office at 228-392-0327.
