The Mississippi Gulf Coast area is no stranger to bad weather. Be sure to have a plan in place so there are no surprises when a storm strikes. For a thorough discussion of disaster planning and pets, check out Saving the Whole Family, created by the American Veterinary Medical Association.
If your pet is on long-term medications (insulin, heart medications, arthritis medications, etc.) or prescription pet food (I/D, R/D, K/D, etc.), be sure to have enough on hand to get through the time of the storm and any down time afterwords if we are not available to fill prescriptions.
If evacuating, schedule out-of-town boarding early or find a pet-friendly hotel. Be sure to have all vaccinations up to date at all times. Keep a paper copy of your pet's record with you for proof of vaccination if we are not open to verify vaccination status over the phone. To find pet-friendly hotels where you are going, try www.pettravel.com, www.petfriendlytravel.com or www.petfriendlyhotelsandtravel.com.
Call us several days ahead if your pet requires anti-anxiety medication or sedatives for travel or thunderstorm anxiety, since supplies may become limited as the storm approaches.
Have any potential illness checked out BEFORE the storm hits to make sure that it does not develop into anything more serious when help is not available.
Give us a call if you have any questions regarding your pets' care and comfort during hurricane season.
